About the Physician

My grandparents moved from Los Angeles to Lanikai in the 1960s and raised their family on Windward Oahu. I was born in Oregon, grew up on Kauai, and graduated from Waimea High School. While attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I was blessed to meet my future wife, a Lahainaluna alumna. After I graduated from the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine, we moved to the mainland for my surgical training, always with the intention of returning to Hawaii to live. I did an internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where I was chief resident, and later did a fellowship in adult reconstruction/hip and knee replacement at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Orange County.Throughout my life my grandmother has been an inspiration. In addition to raising four children, she completed her law degree and dedicated herself to helping the people of Windward Oahu. The example she set led to my choice of a profession that would allow me to make a similar contribution to my community.

About my practice

My undergraduate degree was in civil engineering. I enjoyed this field, but when I was working my way through college at a restaurant in Waikiki, I realized that I wanted to combine my love for the sciences with direct service to others. Medicine was the answer, and, given my engineering background, I was naturally drawn to orthopaedics. The mechanics of muscles and bones are fascinating to me. Being in a position to help patients return to active lives is the most gratifying part of my job. My special interests are minimally invasive total hip replacement, total knee replacement, and partial knee replacement. At UCSF I gave a presentation on orthopaedic surgical care in the country of Malawi. I also spoke on opioid use after surgery at a conference of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. My research on complications of hip and knee realignment, cartilage repair, bone malformation in children after fractures, and the Keiki Ola Pono Sports Program has been published in several medical journals. To stay current in my field, I attend local and national meetings where the latest research is presented. I also read journals as well as the literature put out by my professional organizations, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons.Getting to know my patients as individuals allows me to tailor a care plan that more closely meets their needs. Whenever possible, I recommend starting off with the least invasive treatments.

About the Physician

Growing up on Maui, I developed a deep appreciation for the local community that played an integral role in my development. Sports have always played a large role in my life, and overcoming injuries throughout my athletic career ultimately nurtured my passion for helping patients return to their active lifestyles. While playing football, soccer, and baseball through high school, I was lucky enough to be named the 2003-2004 Maui News M.I.L. Athlete of the Year.

After graduating from H.P. Baldwin High School, I attended both college and medical school at Brown University, where I obtained my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and played varsity baseball. After earning my Doctor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, I completed my residency in orthopedic surgery at Stanford University, where I served as chief resident and had the privilege of training under renowned leaders of each orthopedic subspecialty. Also during residency, I met my wife, Ashley, who is an anesthesiologist. Following residency, I pursued additional subspecialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which included training in advanced minimally-invasive and open procedures of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip. During my fellowship, I served as the Assistant Team Physician for the New York Mets and had the opportunity to care for numerous professional, collegiate, high school, and youth athletes. I then returned to the Bay Area to start my clinical practice, where I served as a team physician for the Golden State Warriors up until my move home to Maui.

About my practice

As a Board Certified and fellowship-trained Sports Medicine orthopedic surgeon, my goal is to get you back to your pre-injury lifestyle, activities, and sports as quickly and safely as possible. As a former collegiate athlete, I understand the importance of an active, pain-free lifestyle – regardless of age or activity level. I advocate for evidence-based treatments of musculoskeletal disorders, utilizing non-operative measures whenever possible. My clinical expertise includes arthroscopic and minimally-invasive reparative and reconstructive techniques of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip, including cartilage restoration and transplantation procedures. I am also trained in general orthopedic procedures, including management of fractures of the upper and lower extremities.

I specialize in both minimally-invasive arthroscopic and open surgeries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip. Common injuries I treat include:
Shoulder: Rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, throwing injuries, biceps/labrum complex injuries (SLAP tears), adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), acromioclavicular (AC) joint injuries, osteoarthritis
Elbow: UCL tears (Tommy John surgery), biceps/triceps tendon injuries, lateral/medial epicondylitis (tennis/golfer’s elbow)
Knee: Ligament injuries (ACL/PCL/MCL/LCL), meniscus tears, cartilage injuries, patellofemoral instability, patellar/quadriceps tendon injuries
Hip: Labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), trochanteric bursitis, abductor tendon (gluteus medius/minimus) tears, hamstring injuries
Biologics: Evidence-based use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)
Fractures: Non-operative and surgical treatment of upper and lower extremity fractures
